September 25, 1997 - A five-member delegation headed by Tourism Minister Hon. Phillip J. Pierre is representing St. Lucia at the 21st Caribbean Tourism Conference (CTC-21) now underway in Aruba. One of the highlights for the St. Lucian delegation will be a press conference today Thursday, September 25, at which the Tourism Minister will outline his government's policy on tourism and new institutional arrangements for the management of the industry. The delegation will also provide the press with a sneak review of a new nature/heritage tourism press kit which the St. Lucia Tourism Board will launch shortly, as the Board seeks to take advantage of opportunities in that particular niche market.

St. Lucia will also take part in the meetings of the Board of Directors of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), working sessions with tour operators and travel agents and several workshops aimed at improving the region's tourism product and the management of the industry. Some of the workshops at this year's conference that are of special interest to the St. Lucian delegation include "Maximizing Tourism Benefits to the Caribbean Community", "Creating an Elite Cadre for Tourism Management from Within", "Why There is Profit and Aesthetic Value in Marketing Culture" and "Achieving Sustainable Tourism Development."

The other members of the St. Lucian delegation are the Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Hon. Menissa Rambally, the Chairman of the Tourist Board, Peter Foster, the Director of Tourism, Agnes Francis and the Tourist Board's Research and Statistics Officer, Louis Lewis.

During the conference, Tourism Director Agnes Francis, along with other Caribbean women recently named by Travel Agent Magazine as the "Most Powerful Women in Travel", will receive a commemorative plaque in recognition of the significant impact she has made on the tourism industry in the Caribbean.
