October 6, 1997 - The General Secretary of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has welcomed St. Lucia as the 188th member of the Union. This follows the signing by the government of St. Lucia, of the instruments of accession to the Constitution and Convention of the ITU. The instruments were deposited on September 4th, 1997.

St. Lucia qualified for membership in this prestigious, Geneva headquartered Organization, by virtue of its membership of the United Nations Organization. Previously, all representations on St. Lucia's behalf were made by the Caribbean Telecommunications Union.

As a result of the island's membership, St. Lucia can now, among other things :
- benefit from training opportunities open to ITU member
states;
- receive circular telegrams from headquarters, as well as the documents/publications, etc., which could provide exposure to the dynamics of telecommunications;
- access the ITU directly and eliminate the third party,
with its inevitable delays;
- have a voice in international fora.
