November 3, 1997 - Mr. Guy Mayers, President of the Chamber of Commerce, in his capacity as Chairman of the newly formed board of directors of Junior Achievement of St. Lucia announced that the official launching ceremony of the 1997-98 Junior Achievement programme of St. Lucia was held here on Thursday, October 30, 1997.

Junior Achievement is an educational programme presented to secondary school age students of St.Lucia in collaboration with the business community and the ministry of education, facilitated by the St. Lucia Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture.

The programme is unusual in that the learning vehicle is an actual business which is created and managed by the actual students. The venture operates outside classroom hours but in school facilities and within the school calendar. The company is created and liquidated in one school year.

The undertaking began last year as a pilot project at the centre for adolescent rehabilitation and education (care) and at five secondary schools in the Castries area, namely, Castries Comprehensive, Corinth, George Charles, Leon Hess and Sir Ira Simmons.

Mr. Mayers is leading a major expansion of junior achievement activities this school year including the expansion of the programme from 6 - 18 sites .

The launching ceremony will focus attention on this major expansion which will create the opportunity for some five hundred and forty St. Lucian students to participate in this very effective and practical training activity.

Local business have responded positively to the concept of corporate sponsorship of a specific junior achievement company. Some of the local corporate citizens involved are Courts St. Lucia Limited, Cox and Company and Cable and Wireless.

Meanwhile, the US Peace Corps through the Government of St. Lucia has provided the Chamber with a Peace Corp volunteer, in the person of David Berthea, who will serve as full time executive director of Junior Achievement St. Lucia.
