September 18, 1997 - Regional delegates move into day-two of a three day workshop aimed at improving the
status, terms, and conditions of work, of domestic workers in the Caribbean.
The September 17-19 activity taking place in the Jamaican Capital, Kingston, groups Heads
of Women's Bureau and domestic workers in the sub region.
The workshop, which has been organized by the International Labour Organization, is
attempting to identify critical issues of concern for domestic workers and measures to
address them, develop a Caribbean strategy for domestic workers and outline activities and
specific projects for technical cooperation to implement the strategy.
Key topics being implemented are the legal status of domestic workers, protection, wages,
terms and conditions of work, establishment or strengthening of domestic workers
organizations, training, placement services and institutional support for domestic workers
in the region.
St. Lucia is being represented at the workshop by Marcia Lesmond - Director of Women's
Affairs and Ophelia Small, a domestic worker from Bexon.
