Wednesday 21 September 2011 Over its 50 year legacy and partnership with the people of Saint Lucia, the Peace Corps has made significant contributions to the island's development in various areas including the critical area of special education.

Associate Director of Peace Corps, Sharmon Jules says, in the initial stages the focus was on teacher training, however this mandate has quickly evolved.

“Over the years we have also provided student support services, and made a critical impact in terms of the development of special education in Saint Lucia.”

Special education teacher at the Dunottar School for children with special needs, Rodney Maxius, says the Peace Corps was instrumental in the founding of the school and provided a significant amount of hands-on professional teacher training and support.

Ms. Jules says the Dunottar school was one of the projects established in the early history of the peace corps' contribution towards elevating special education in Saint Lucia.

“In terms of training the special education needs teachers, helping to establish that programme in the schools and also raising awareness of the needs of children with specials needs which influenced the establishment of resource centres and special education centres as well.”

The Ministry of Education extends its gratitude to the Peace Corps Movement here in Saint Lucia for their meaningful contribution towards the demanding task of special education advancement.
