Tuesday 22 November 2011 Minister for Tourism, Honourable  Allen Chastanet, has asserted that 'the village tourism concept' has been firmly on the governmental agenda.  However, the concept    has   undertaken new dimensions and has been broadened to  make villages around the island tourism ready.

Minister Chastanet also spoke of the village tourism concept as being designed to accentuate local culture, provide jobs, and benefit communities such as Dennery, Soufriere, Gros Islet, and Anse La Raye.

“This is a programme which has been ongoing or the past four and a half years—the idea is to involve the villages in more tourism related commercial enterprises, such as shops and bars.”

The minister described the concept as embracing a different approach to doing business in a way that will add value to the tourism industry and best position small and micro- businesses in the service sector to take advantage of the tourism economy.

The minister noted there must be a major shift in the mindset of locals as well so that they can continue to add their special touch to making the visitor experience extra special.
