Tuesday 22 November 2011 – The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus, on Monday, November 21, launched an exhibition at the Open Campus Library to celebrate the life and work of the distinguished twin brother of the Honourable Derek Walcott—another renowned luminary of the arts. Head of the UWI Open Campus, Veronica Simon, says Roderick Walcott—who passed away in March of 2000—must be re-introduced to a whole new generation as an artiste par excellence who brought artistic exuberance to Saint Lucia's landscape. “It is critical for us to preserve and continue to revisit this aspect of our history, especially as our children continue to be bombarded by the new colonizers and are brainwashed into believing that we have nothing to offer the world; that we are doomed to be consumers of the culture of others with none to call our own.” A programme of activities will be held from the week of November 21 to 25, which will bring to the public the plays of Roderick Walcott. Walcott is being celebrated as a screen writer, leader of the Turks carnival band, costume set designer, literary editor, song lyricist, and Saint Lucia's first director of culture. |
