Monday 28 March 2011  The German Development Bank, KFW, has donated over $EC10 million to the OECS and CARICOM to assist in their HIV/AIDS  programmes.

Minister for Health, Dr. Keith Mondesir says the the money is given to CARICOM, but the Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP) is responsible for distributing it.

“We are cash strapped as regards our HIV/AIDS programme and we are happy that we are now getting the funding from this German corporation and also from Petfar an American organization; all in all,  it looks like we will be able to continue to support our HIV/AIDS programme.”

The minister is hoping that Saint Lucia's request to broaden the scope of use for the donated funds will be approved.

“HIV is a problem but we have an even bigger problem in terms of mortality – the bigger problem is the non-communicable diseases  like  diabetes, hypertension and Cancer;  these create more deaths on our island than  AIDS.  So we've asked the donors to

broaden the scope of the last phase of the project  to allow us to use some of the money in other areas of healthcare.”

The German KFW bank HIV/AIDS assistance project began in 2005 and will end in 2012.
