Thursday 31 March 2011 – Government recently handed over to four Conway families keys to their new properties in Morne D'or, quarter of Anse La Raye. The initiative is part of the Ministry of Housing, Urban Renewal, and Local Government's plans to improve the quality of housing for residents of depressed communities.
Minister for Housing Hon. Richard Frederick said the fire that occurred in Conway on June 4, 2004, served as his ministry's driving force for speedy relocation of residents.
“The settlement in its current form is unsustainable, unsuitable for habitation, whilst exposing residence to natural and man made disasters. The situation is compounded by the inaccessibility of those households in the case of an emergency. In the absence of initiatives like this, households in Conway are yet to join others who own land in fair Helen, and enjoy the in tenants benefits.”
Frederick also used the occasion to reiterate government's housing policy.
“Despite challenges along the way, the achievement of our object is to relocate households from Conway to locations which are serviced with the requisite physical and social amenities, consistent with approved residential standards. “Government's commitment to housing is full access by the population to adequate, affordable, safe and sustainable housing, which is consistent with an acceptable socio-cultural standard of living.”
The project is part of the Ministry of Housing, Urban Renewal and local Government's wider Shelter Development Programme. To date ,the ministry has identified three additional sites for the same purpose, namely, Monchy, Fond Manger in the quarter of Anse La Raye, and Garrand in Babonneau.
It is hoped that similar handover ceremonies will occur shortly. |
