Tuesday 1 March 2011 – Minister responsible for the island`s air and seaports, Honourable Guy Joseph, has disclosed that the commencement of work on the Hewanorra International Airport redevelopment will not significantly offset the daily operations at the island`s main airport.

Minister Joseph says during the construction phases, the airport will still be positioned to welcome visitors with the high quality service that Saint Lucia is known for.

“We may have to redirect traffic in certain areas at the airport. The parking lot will have to be shifted. These are some of the things that the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) is working on in the preliminary preparation.

“Where the new terminal will be constructed will not affect the existing terminal. There will be some inconveniences in terms of the normal day-to-day operations but not to the extent that would make the airport dysfunctional.”

Minister Joseph says site preparations and commencement of construction works at the airport is expected to begin shortly.

“The last discussion that I had with the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) after the Airport Redevelopment Bill was approved by the Senate, I know that the Authority is finalising the arrangements with the financiers and the contractors.

“I don’t want to put a definite date, but I think that within six to eight weeks we should actually see physical construction works or at least site preparation in terms of foundation work beginning at Hewanorra Airport.”

Minister Joseph says he is very excited about the economic opportunities that the airport redevelopment will present for many local contractors and other classes of workers who will benefit directly or indirectly from the project.

The Hewanorra Airport Redevelopment Project will be managed by the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA).
