Wednesday 15 June 2011 – A tree-less world is one many of us can not imagine. According to the United Nations World Assembly and officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, every individual needs to play his or her part in ensuring Saint Lucia’s natural resources, and the earth itself is preserved. In light of this, “World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought” is deemed crucial.
“The observance events are designed to get everyone to take on at least one action to help minimize the threat highlighted in terms of desertification and drought, as a threat,” says Watershed Management Activity Leader in the Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, John Lewis. “This year being international year of the forest, the “World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought”, will focus specifically on the forest in its dry-land areas around the world, guided by the motto “Forest keep dry-lands working.”
“The idea is to get the 2 billion people inhabiting the world in terms of dry-lands to plant at least one tree to ensure that it survives.; that means if every tree survives then you’d probably have at least 2 billion trees planted and established—a very significant achievement.”
The United Nations' World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is annually observed on June 17 to highlight the urgent need to curb the desertification process. It also aims to strengthen the visibility of the dry-lands issue on the international environmental agenda. |
