Thursday 2 June 2011The month of June marked the official commencement of the Hurricane season. According to the Meteorological Services, there has continually been unique activity in the regions of the North Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.

Acting Meteorologist of the Hewannorra International Met Office, Lucious Frederick, highlighted some weather patterns and advised the public to take heed.

“The leading forecast agencies have all predicted above normal activity for this season. Scientists expect that there will be 12 to 17 named storms, of which 6 to ten will become hurricanes, and 3 to 6 major hurricanes. Rainfall is also forecasted to be above normal for this season. Since we have had rainfall above normal so far for this year, there is a high probability of landslides and flooding occurring during this season.

“The Saint Lucia Met Services urges all Saint Lucians to make adequate plans and preparations for the season. Please pay attend to weather reports, advisories and bulletins. Particularly those issued by this office. Also, pay attention to advisories from the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO).”

Acting Meteorologist of the Hewannorra International Met Office, Lucious Frederick.

The Hurricane season ends on November 30.  Members of the public seeking further information should call the Met. Services at 452 5860 or 454 6550 or the Weather Hotline at 454-7386.
