Wednesday 15 June 2011 Lady Janice Compton, Patron of Helpage: The Saint Lucia National Council of and For Older Persons shared her sentiments on the observance of World Elderly Abuse Awareness Day, yesterday June 15.
During her decade long involvement as Patron, Lady Janice has been afforded the privilege of meeting and interacting with a wide cross-section of senior citizens on island.
None of us would be experiencing the quality of life that we enjoy, Lady Janice says, if it were not for the people who nurtured us and entrusted us with the Saint Lucia we all enjoy today.
It is said that a society can be judged by the way it treats its weakest and most vulnerable members the youth, the disabled and its senior citizens. I do believe that, in general, Saint Lucia can claim to have a relatively high level of respect for its elderly. There is, however, an unpleasant reality and it is that quite a few older persons in Saint Lucia are being abused either by their care givers, members of their families or members of their communities.
Society must consider all the aspects that abuse covers, Lady Janice says, in order to confront these abuses.
Neglect or abandonment, financial abuse or exploitation, emotional and psychological abuse, healthcare, fraud and abuse, and physical and sexual abuse, Lady Janice says, are all components to be addressed.
