Friday 17 June 2011 Today is recognized as “World Desertification Day”.  In commemoration of ‘World Desertification Day’ the Ministry of Physical Development and the Environment would like to bring to focus one of the Government’s major projects being implemented to combat desertification.

The Government of Saint Lucia as a signatory to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is fulfilling its obligation by executing a Capacity Building and Mainstreaming of Sustainable Land Management Project.

The major goal of the project is to improve the overall ecosystem which would impact positively on the environmental, economic and social well being of the people of Saint Lucia.

By the end of the Project the capacity for sustainable land management (SLM) in Saint Lucia will be strengthened at both the individual and institutional level.  In addition the activities of the project should ensure that sustainable land management issues are mainstreamed into national development strategies and policies.

In pursuing its major goal, the project would therefore aim at minimizing the incidence of land degradation or desertification in Saint Lucia.   The project is scheduled to be completed by June 2012.
