Wednesday 15 June 2011 Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Guy Joseph, says given the fact that the country cannot predict the scale of the hurricane season, government is actively undertaking desilting works in rivers throughout the length and breadth of Saint Lucia, in an attempt to alleviate the impact of any potential disaster.

“You will see that the Castries river is silted quite a lot more than it was in previous years, so we have at least 4 or 5 contractors engaged within the Castries river, in terms of the works.

“On our regular program, we have received some approvals from the Ministry of Finance, so we will be tackling the rest of the island, as we move forward because looking at the unpredictable weather patterns that we are seeing, we want to take all the necessary precautions, so that we do not find ourselves in a situation where we are not prepared to deal with some of the issues.”

Minister Joseph says despite many challenges and interruptions, the desilting works will continue in the upcoming weeks, especially in areas such as Micoud, Mabouya Valley and Soufriere, where much headway has been made.
