Tuesday 5 July 2011 – The island's disaster preparedness will today be scrutinized at a meeting of the nation's agencies charged with that responsibility. Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Hon. Stephenson King is expected to chair the meeting. Government’s Press Secretary, Darnley Le Bourne says the meeting is an extremely important meeting of NEMAC—the National Emergency Management Advisory committee.
“That committee provides the overall mechanism for coordination of disaster preparedness on the island. It is a committee that is chaired by the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia because of its importance and it’s an entity that is made up of permanent secretaries of every government ministry and various national authorities like the police, the Fire Service, and importantly, chairpersons of critical national committees. It's going to provide an opportunity more less to evaluate our state of preparedness.”
According to Le Bourne after the meeting the island would be in a better position to respond more effectively to any threats or disasters in the coming months.
The NEMAC meeting will be held today from 2 p.m. at the NIC conference facility. |
