Thursday, July 21, 2011 – The Government of Taiwan continues to invest in the educational development of Saint Lucian citizens. On Wednesday July 20th, some seventeen young people received the nod of approval. The young people received full scholarships under the 2011 Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund International Higher Education Scholarship Programmes.
The seventeen Saint Lucians will be flown to Taiwan as early as August this year, to begin their under-graduate and post graduate studies in various fields.
Taiwanese Ambassador His Excellency Tom Chou says the scholarship programme was initiated by his government in recognition of the importance of education to the development of people. “Taiwan has provided scholarship to Saint Lucian citizens since 2007 and the number of scholarships awarded to Saint Lucians has increased each year from five in 2007 to six in 2008, nine in 2009, sixteen in 2010 and this year we are awarding seventeen scholarships, one of the key reasons behind the increase in the number of scholarships is the outstanding performance of our Saint Lucians students in Taiwan”.
So far fifty one Saint Lucians have been awarded Taiwanese scholarships – three of whom completed their Master Degree programmes last year.
Minister responsible for the Youth and Human Resource Development Honourable Lenard Montoute says the Taiwanese Scholarships provide an avenue for Saint Lucians to explore their full educational potential. “While the cost of education increases there is growing competition for Tertiary Education and dwindling opportunities for scholarships, as a government we invest heavily in providing Tertiary Education for our nationals but our best efforts are never enough and so we show our deepest appreciation when friendly governments like Taiwan come forward with such scholarships offers for us.”
The Taiwanese Ambassador say Taiwan will continue to partner with local authorities to secure scholarships for the further advancements of Saint Lucian citizens. Taiwan has a population of twenty three million people and is the world’s 16th largest trading nation with outstanding achievements in hi-tech, agriculture, health, foreign trade, education-government and in the service sector. |
