Taiwanese Embassy announces scholarship offers for 2011

Thursday 27 January 2011 –  The 2011 Taiwan & ICDF scholarship program will be accepting St. Lucian applicants from 1^st of  February to the 25^th  February, 2011.

The Taiwan Scholarship program organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), and the “ICDF Scholarship Program” organized by International Cooperation and Development Fund, is designed to enhance the educational exchanges between St. Lucia and Taiwan, and provide an opportunity for people who would like to experience a different culture and study abroad for a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD degree.

Taiwan is one of the leading countries in many industries, such as information technology and semi-conductor industries, and has been trying to contribute itself to the international community based on its strong hi-tech and economic capabilities.  One important reason for the achievement of the economic miracle of Taiwan is the development of its well-educated human resources.  There are 103 universities and 62 colleges in Taiwan, and those educational institutions offer plentiful opportunities for students to study in different areas. 

For the Taiwan Scholarship Program, it is necessary for every recipient to study mandarin Chinese during the first year. If the first year’s academic result is satisfactory, recipients can then apply for undergraduate, master or postgraduate programs offered by the universities.

The total duration of this scholarship program is a maximum of 5 years. Persons interested in the program, must deliver application documents, including a completed application form, a copy of secondary school or higher education certificate and transcript authenticated by the Ministry of Education & Culture or relevant authorities, and two reference letters, and Police Clearance Letter to the Embassy from 1^st to 26^th February, 2011. Once the persons are granted Taiwan Scholarships, they will be provided single flight ticket to Taipei, and NT$30,000 living allowance (about US$900, depending on the exchange rate) per month to study in Taiwan.

For the ICDF Scholarship Program, there are 5 undergraduate, 17 master and 2 PhD programs available to apply. Applicants please deliver his/her application documents, including completed application forms, a copy of college/university diploma and transcript authenticated by the Ministry of Education & Culture or relevant authorities, two reference letters, and Police Clearance Letter to the Embassy from 1^st to 26^th February, 2010. Please note that 2 application forms need to be filled in: one is the university application forms depending on the applied program, the other is ICDF Scholarship application form.

University forms can be downloaded from the university websites. ICDF form has to be filled out online, print it out and sign it before submitting to the Embassy. Once the persons are granted ICDF Scholarship, they will be provided single-flight tickets to Taipei, housing, tuition, credit fees, insurance, textbook costs and a monthly living allowance to study in Taiwan.

Both Taiwan and ICDF Scholarship annual award periods are from 1^st September through August 31^st of the following year. If recipients fail to arrive in Taiwan to study during this period, their award status will be cancelled and cannot be extended for another year.

Please note that Saint Lucia Government officials who are interested in the scholarship programs should summit their applications to the Training Division of the Ministry of the Public Service & Human Resource Development. Different deadlines might apply to some of the ICDF Scholarship programs for Government officials, please check with the Training Division.

A briefing session about our 2011 Scholarship programs will be held in the St Lucia National ICT Center at 10:00AM on Thursday, 28^th January, 2010.
