Monday 31 January 2011  Following a very successful Post Tomas Recovery campaign, the Government of Saint Lucia continues its efforts to mobilize and secure resources that can be applied towards the Hurricane Tomas Rebuilding Effort. As part of this effort the vital health sector is receiving attention.

Government is in a position to announce that funds have been identified from the World Bank through its Emergency Response mechanism to undertake major infrastructural works in relation to the Dennery Hospital and other health facilities on the island. The funds in question will be used to undertake work in two phases with regards to the Dennery Hospital. In the first phase, temporary retrofitting and repairs will be undertaken to the exiting structure. This will be followed by the reconstruction of the Dennery Hospital at a new location within the village of Dennery.

The decision to construct the new Dennery Hospital at a different site is based on the realization that accessibility to the Hospital is seriously compromised during major flooding within the low lying areas of the village. This fact was illustrated during the recent floods of October 9th, 2010 and during the passage of Hurricane Tomas. There are also major problems related to maintenance of equipment and appliances at the current location due to the saline conditions as a result of persistent “sea blast” from the near by Atlantic Ocean.

The World Bank funding will also provide for among other things rehabilitation works for Victoria Hospital, the Soufriere Hospital and three major Health Centres around the island. Major and critical works of a general nature covering areas such as drainage, retrofitting and rain water harvesting will be undertaken.

The public will be provided with further details in the coming weeks regarding the implementation of projects for the health sector funded through the World Bank Emergency Response mechanism.
