Friday 21 January 2011 – More than ever before in the 20 year history of the event, more home grown talent will be used both on and behind the stage at this year's Saint Lucia Jazz festival.
Officials of the Saint Lucia Tourist Board has this year, on the occasion of the 20th Annual Jazz Festival said the island has come into its own and has attained a greater level of independence in many aspects of the music festival.
Chairperson of Saint Lucia Jazz Special Events Committee Cuthbert Didier, explained this is a sign that the festival has come into its own and organizers, over the years, have been able to cut down significantly on the committee’s outsourcing budget.
“There's a reason why this year is very, very special. We have from the Board's perspective, continued to create the policy called national ownership. This year the Saint Lucia Tourist Board booked all the artistes without a middleman. There was no BET. We took total creative control of the line-up. This year, ‘Jazz on the Square’ has been handed to a national company that is owned and has the resources on island.”
Didier says an even higher feeling of nationalism will also be projected throughout the two-week period as well, as the event will feature a healthy cadre of Saint Lucian entertainers including saxophonist Augustin 'Jab’ Duplesis, Mervyn Wilkinson, and the Derek Yarde Project.
