Wednesday 26 January 2011  UNESCO’s Secretary General for Saint Lucia Marcia Symphorien says  UNESCO's    “Memory of the World” (MOW) programme  was established in 1992 to guard  against collective amnesia. She says  it is  a proud moment to see Saint Lucia at the forefront  of the Memory  of the World programme in the  region.

“UNESCO welcomes such efforts and has acknowledged Saint Lucia's work towards the achievement of the Memory of the World Vision.

“ The election of  Mrs. Margot Thomas to the presidency of the Memory of the World for Latin America and the Caribbean  is a demonstration of the confidence level  in Mrs. Thomas  and by extension Saint Lucia's ability to lead the region on matters related to the MOW and heritage preservation in general.”

The objectives of the National Memory of the World programme include identification of  documentary heritage, raising awareness, preservation, and access to information among others.
