Monday 24 January 2011 – The Government of Saint Lucia is continuing to take the necessary steps to develop the country’s workforce in keeping with international demands for more skilled and qualified employees.
In this regard, the Ministry of the Public Service and Human Resource Development has announced the start of registration for the 2011 Summer Employment Programme which targets University and Tertiary level students as well as Form Five Secondary School students.
Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of the Public Service Duane Louisy says the programme provides school leavers an opportunity to gain on-the-job experience which will benefit them in their studies while preparing them for the world of work.
“ Before applying, students must have an understanding of what’s available and what’s out there in the world of work and the direction they would like to take in terms of their career aspirations. Having gone through the Summer Employment Programme, the students will be better prepared to know the area of specialisation and whether or not the area of study that they have undertaken is what they actually want to do in the future. “So far we have a number of students who are interested in the 2011 Summer Employment Programme and in past years I can tell you that our past experience have always shown that we attract more students than we are able to absorb in the Public Service at any point in time.”
University and tertiary level students who are in the final year of their studies as well as Form Five Secondary School students who are interested in the 2011 Summer Employment Programme are to complete a registration form which is available from the Ministry of the Public Service, Greaham Louisy Administrative Building on the Waterfront in Castries
Qualifying students receive a stipend upon completion of their two-month stint at the various Government Ministries and Departments.
The 2011 Summer Employment Programme is scheduled to run from June to August and will place students who qualify in suitable employment throughout the various ministries and departments. The deadline for submission of applications is March 30. |
