Tuesday, January 18, 2010   Saint Lucia Jazz 2011 was officially launched on island, along with simultaneous launches at the Caribbean Hotel Association in Jamaica and other international destinations.

This year's festival will be hosted from April 30 to May 8, at various locations islandwide.

“Saint Lucia Jazz has developed from humble beginnings back in 1991” says John Emmanuel, Public Relations Manager, Saint Lucia Tourist Board (SLTB) “to receiving international recognition as being one of the most anticipated events on the Caribbean's calendar.

“What started off as a marketing endeavour to increase the number of visitors to the island during the traditional low season of May has developed over the years into a world class musical affair.”

The board faces perennial challenges, Emmanuel says, including providing an impressive line up with the incorporation of local artistes, for a discerning public.

Chairman of SLTB Special Events Committee Cuthbert Didier, says the proliferation of fringe events increases national participation in the festival.

Didier says each fringe location offers a unique flavour and the island comes alive in every corner.

“After twenty years of doing the festival, we're still there, on top, and consistent, and still in the top three in the world. I think Saint Lucians need to really take that as a sign that we are doing something right. At a time when resources  are very scarce and with all the challenges we face, the government has still found it fitting to see the Jazz festival as a very critical marketing tool.”

The main stage line up includes names like Morgan Heritage, Mervyn Wilkinson, Ledisi, Yellow Jackets, Taj Weekes, and John Legend.

The SLTB has extended the suspense, as the headliner for the Saturday's main stage event will be announced in the coming days.

This year’s event is unique in that the festival is being managed and executed in the main by Saint Lucians.

Several local artistes are expected to feature in the music festival from its inception to its culmination.
