Government continues to reward outstanding national sports personalities |
Contact: Darnley Lebourne Thursday, January 6, 2010 – The Government of Saint Lucia continues to implement its policy of honoring Saint Lucia’s premier sports personalities. Consistent with that policy and the decision of an earlier cabinet conclusion, the Government of Saint Lucia over the past two weeks completed recognition and reward packages for two of Saint Lucia’s Ace athletes in the persons of Levern Spencer and Darren Sammy.
These two athletes have both been identified as “Outstanding National Sports Personalities” based on their exceptional achievements locally, regionally and internationally in their respective disciplines. Prime Minister Stephenson King and the Cabinet of Ministers in recognition of the achievements of these two Saint Lucian sporting heroes have made decisions in providing Levern and Darren individual packages of 10,000 sq. ft. of land and official passports.
Over the past two weeks Darren Sammy through the National Housing Corporation was presented with a plot of 10,000 sq. ft. of land within the Marigot Housing Estate development. During that period Government also finalized the processing of an Official Passport for Levern Spencer ahead of her travel on the weekend to begin a two month training stint ahead of the start of her new professional season in April of this year.
On October 25th last year, the Government of Saint Lucia in collaboration with Digicel and the Saint Lucia National Cricket Association staged a major celebration of Darren Sammy’s ascendancy to the captaincy of the West Indies Cricket team. During that ceremony Darren Sammy was handed an Official Passport by Prime Minister Stephenson King. Ms. Levern Spencer sometime mid last year 2010 was also presented with a 10,000 sq. ft. parcel of land within the same development by the National Housing Corporation.
The Government of Saint Lucia through the Ministry of Youth & Sports plans to make a formal presentation of the Official Passport to Ms. Spencer at a special ceremony to be held sometime during the month of February this year. Minister of Sports, Hon. Lenard Montoute will present Ms. Levern Spencer with the Official Passport at a small ceremony before her departure, which is scheduled for this Saturday, January 8th, 2011. Telecommunications service provider LIME, Levern’s main sponsor is expected to make a small presentation of work undertaken to date in the development of a website for Levern Spencer during that ceremony. The website which is being developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth & Sports is expected to be completed during the month of February 2010 in time for the annual National Sports Awards.
