Monday 31 January 2011 – The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force is ready to showcase a different facet of the state's law enforcement institution.
On Wednesday evening, police recruits from Course 31 Debating Team will host a public debate on the topic: “The Re-branding of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force to the Royal Saint Lucia Police Service will make it a more effective organization”
Youth and Sports Programme Development Officer with the Ministry of Social Transformation Mr. Jim Xavier says over the past four months, the recruits have been exposed to rigorous training in preparation for this exercise.
“The whole objective of the debate is to sharpen the public speaking skills of the police recruits as they are supposed to go to the courts and argue against very eloquent lawyers and we are aware that training the police is not just about crime fighting. We're trying to have a well rounded programme for them and public speaking is integral.”
Xavier also indicated that several keenly contested in-house debates have taken place among the recruits thus providing the opportunity for everyone to hone their oratory skills.
“We started off on the 24 of August in preparing them in public speaking and impromptu speaking and what we did was to have an audition. In terms of potential, we have the best or some of the best speakers on board for the final debate.”
Meantime, sixty police recruits are undergoing training at the Royal Police Academy. Training commenced in June 2010, and will culminate with the passing out ceremony on the 4th of March, 2011. |
