CARICOM stands ready to continue its assistance to Haiti |
Friday 14 January 2011 – Chairman of CARICOM and Prime Minister of Grenada Honourable Tillman Thomas, has made a special promise to Haiti on behalf of CARICOM membership states such as Saint Lucia, on the first anniversary of the Haiti Earthquake on January 12.
The prime minister said the Government and people of Haiti can be assured that their Caribbean Community counterparts will continue to demand from the international community that they honour their financial pledges made in various fora to rebuild the country.
Prime Minister Thomas further pledged that the integration of Haiti into the CARICOM Single Market and Economy is a key element of the rebuilding process, offering as it does a ready duty-free market for Haiti’s products.
Already there is agreement for a number of these products to enter the CARICOM Single market in a non-reciprocal basis for three years, an indication of the Community’s desire to assist in resuscitating the Haitian economy. The earthquake shook the country's capital at its core, reducing Port au Prince to a mass of rubble and a nightmare of unspeakable human suffering has ensued since then, exacerbated recently by a deadly cholera outbreak which has claimed the lives of thousands. |
