Friday, February 11, 2011 – “ Walls Do Not Make Hospitals” so says Minister for Health Honourable Dr. Keith Mondesir while announcing some of government's proactive plans for the new general hospital scheduled for completion in 2012.
The hospital will receive funding from the European Union with what is being described as state of the art equipment. “We have negotiated to train cardiologist nurses in Mexico, we have been on a campaign since I have been the Minister of Health looking for specialization of various doctors in other countries. To make a specialist it requires two hands, two legs and a brain and this is what Saint Lucia have. Saint Lucia have the brain pool because we could not have produced two Nobel laureates without having a brain pool that can manage that. ”
According to Minister Mondesir despite the limited financial resources of the country rather than contract its service, the Ministry of health will soon be expanding on some of the services which will be offered when the new general hospital becomes operational.
The Minister while concerned about the large number of people suffering from kidney failure, says that not to long from now - the information given to me is by the end of February we are hoping to establish a unit in Vieux Fort to take care of the people from the south, so we recognize its not the concrete blocks and the walls it is what within and we are saying with the dedication the effort, the hard work our people produce we will do it.” Minister Mondesir calls for a joint approach involving; patients, caregivers and government, if Saint Lucia is to make any significant dents in its current health problems. |
