Tuesday, February 08, 2011 – The Boy's Training Centre Manager Mr. Leonard Terrance has publicly lamented that this residential institution for the rehabilitation of boys has been labelled with a stigma which should be dispelled forthwith. The stigma he refers to is that 'the boys Training centre is a breeding ground for the Bordelais Correctional facility.' Mr. Terrance says this type of attitude undermines the role of the centre, within the society. “When a boy leaves the centre he goes back to the same environment that put him at the boys training centre. There is no place we can put him, we cannot say let us place him in Choiseul if he's from Soufriere or from St. Lucia to Grenada. He goes back to the same family, the same circle of friends.”
The Boy's Training Centre Head says attempting to assist socially deviant young men is hard work, which is sometimes defeated by the return of the wards into unhealthy environments, “when we talk about the programmes that are offered at the Boy's Training Centre we have the traditional programmes that are offered albeit it needs to be better than it is right now and that is what we are working towards,” Terrance ended The BTC, he says, which marks its 51st anniversary on the 20th of February, 2011 has many success stories to share. |
