The creation of affordable housing for Saint Lucians particularly the nations youth and low income earners remain a top priority for the Government of Saint Lucia (GOSL). That’s according to the island’s Minister for Housing Honourable Richard Frederick who also disclosed in an exclusive interview with the Government Information Service (GIS) that government was preparing to release its National Housing Policy very soon.
Minister Frederick says such a policy has become even more important following the destruction to the Housing Sector by Hurricane Tomas. “The Government is seeking to allocate some twenty seven million dollars to assist people in different communities who’s houses were affected by hurricane Tomas, government is trying desperately to secure the funding obviously that has been a problem since the global recession which did not spare us but ala in all things are moving on and as Housing Minister I am quite elated at the prospects for getting more housing lots available at a very low rate to the people of Saint Lucia”.
The National Housing Policy will clearly indicate the does and don’ts for the development of housing properties throughout Saint Lucia.
Meantime Minister Frederick has also provided an update on the status of several government undertaken Housing Development projects. “The Marigot Development is completed and I am very elated about this, a lot of people have expressed interest and many people have paid deposits on the properties in Marigot, we have another development in Balambouche that is progressing smoothly that development will yield about three hundred and fifty lots we also have the St Jude`s East Garden Housing Project which is ongoing and that project is being undertaken by CO Williams so all in all things are going on quite well,” the minister said.
The St Jude`s East Garden Housing Project will create three hundred low income house lots for Saint Lucians.
Government will continue to explore avenues to create more opportunities for citizens to own houses in this country. |
