Wednesday, August 24, 2011 – The Saint Lucia Development Bank SLDB is continuing to align itself with youth development in this country.
Managing Director of the SLDB, Jn. Francois Sonson recently told the Government Information Service that the bank proudly undertook its “Youth Agenda” from its inception and has realized many success stories since February 2009.
He cited the educational and entrepreneurial programmes as very well subscribed by the youthful section of the population. “From the inception of the bank when we submitted our business plan we did recognize that one of the sectors that we would be willing to pay attention to was our young people. In fact I can just say that since the bank began operations about 2 years ago we have developed many programmes that can serve our young people. In the area of Education, recognizing the importance of training the young people and training our workforce, the bank has paid particular attention to our young people. In fact about 40 % of the bank's portfolio this time, would have gone to student loans. A very interesting programme was when we partnered with the Ministry of Tourism and Monroe College. We partnered in developing training programmes 600 youth in the hospitality industry so they can access the cruise ships which come to Saint Lucia and that ply the Caribbean,” Sonson said.
The Bank has prepared a Five (5) Year Business Plan as it charts its future and contribute to the shaping of the development of this nation. The plan will be reviewed annually and revised in keeping with the changing environment in the social and economic areas of the island.
