Monday, August 22, 2011 – For the third consecutive year Saint Lucia has secured a prominent place in the junior category of the 2011 Florida Caribbean Cruise Association FCCA Foundation Essay Competition.

This year’s competition topic was “What Does Sustainable Tourism Mean To My Destination”

The Junior Division of the competition sought entries from students aged 12 and under.   Eight entries were submitted and the chosen essay came from eleven year old George Louis of the Saltibus Combined School.   Louis’ essay was submitted to the FCCA which won Saint Lucia third place among nineteen participating countries.

Mr. Louis exemplified true understanding of the topic and was able to define and explain “Sustainable Tourism” in the context of its relevance to Saint Lucia.   The Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation therefore wishes to congratulate George Louis and the Saltibus Combined School for their hard work and dedication.

According to Louis, “Sustainable Tourism is the new thrust that seems to address and eliminate some negative impacts of tourism on the environment.   Sustainable tourism provides many benefits for Saint Lucia including benefits for the local community, tourism businesses, government and the quality of life for the surrounding communities, a high quality of experience for the visitor, preservation of the natural and cultural environment, a more positive attitude of locals towards visitors and revenue from the tourism activities in their community or nearby communities.” Louis explained.

The FCCA Foundation – Children’s Essay Contest is an annual event organised by the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association which provides children under 16 years and under an opportunity to produce written work on a number of tourism related issues and is open to participants across the region.
