Friday, August 05, 2011 – A recommendation for an Integrated Registration System to be established in Saint Lucia which will be used for the entry of diabetes is one of the recommendations made by a Taiwan medical team who conducted a study on  Diabetes and  Hypertension in Saint Lucia recently.

In presenting their preliminary findings to the medical officials and the media, the medical team also recommended a professional fitness trainer be assigned to working with diabetics in order to boost their exercise regimes.

Minister for Health Honourable Dr. Keith Mondesir endorsed the findings but called for the team to return to Saint Lucia to pursue a more detailed survey of diabetes and hypertension.          “I would like to see this team come back to Saint Lucia, and do a more detailed, in terms of patients and testing in terms of glucose both prior and faster so we can be more thorough and detailed so we can get the analysis and get our statistics rights in terms of what percentage of our population is diabetic and hypertensive.”

The study by the Taiwanese also recommended that the intake of fruits and vegetables should be highly promoted. The Study entitled “Analyzing Diabetes in Saint Lucia 2011 Preliminary Findings” is a collaboration between the Changhua Christian Hospital and the National Taiwan University.
