Wednesday 6 April 2011  Positive engagement  among the youth is the focus of this year's youth month celebrations.

The Ministry of Social Transformation, Youth and sports, in collaboration with the young people  of Saint Lucia, have planned a series of activities to mark the occasion.    This year's  theme is “My Contribution, My Future:  Participating for Progress”.

“The aim of the theme,” says  Youth and Sports Officer Margaret Deterville, “is to encourage young persons to participate and contribute and become members of social community clubs and organizations.

“Some of the activities  that have been planned in celebration of the month are: an Inspirational Celebration of Youth which would take place on April the 14th at the Vigie Complex, and the annual Wayne Louis Memorial Lecture which will take place on April 14 at the Soufriere Parish Hall.”

Other activities include a Youth Ambassadors' Seminar at the Palm Haven Hotel scheduled for April 8th and 9th, panel discussions throughout the month, and for the first time a “Join A Club Campaign” scheduled to begin on April 15.

“The objective of the “Join A Club” campaign,  basically, is to get young persons into structured activities and programmes which would minimize some of the delinquency issues that have come up recently.”

Young persons, Deterville says, should be engaged in contributing  to the  national development of  their community and the country as a whole.
