Prime Minister King announces additional support for financially burdened students |

Wednesday 20 April 2011 – Prime Minister King during his budget presentation revealed the complementary social component of government 's educational policy. He highlighted a number of initiatives aimed at providing financial support to economically deprived students.
“These include an increase in the number of bursaries awarded to students - 100 new bursaries are being offered annually, totalling half a million dollars this year. Enforcing the policy that every child graduating from secondary school should write at least five subjects including Mathematics and English to ensure that the vicious cycle of poverty is broken and providing children whose families are not economically capable, the opportunity to write as many CXC/CAPE subjects as they can. “ A provision of EC$1 million has been made in the budget for the Education Access Fund for that purpose.” The prime minister said these initiatives will ensure that every child will have an equal opportunity to excel at school, regardless of his/her socio-economic circumstances. |
