Thursday 14 April 2011 – Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy at the officially opening of the 6th session of the 9th Parliament of Saint Lucia, announced government’s commitment to safeguarding Saint Lucia's food security. To this end, she enunciated government's intention to place greater focus on the agricultural sector. Attention, she said, will be placed on the acquisition of property from the banana company Winfresh which is presently in liquidation.
“Since assuming office government has set about carefully and purposefully to reinstate the agricultural sector to the position of prominence it once enjoyed. These assets include the shares of held by the company Winfresh and the lands in the Mabouya Valley. This decision is aimed at protecting the interest of Saint Lucia in Winfresh and at avoiding prime agricultural lands being used for speculative purposes, because recent events have shown that these interests are being placed at risk.” Her Excellency said the strategy adopted, will assist the country to cushion the effects of both current and future food price hikes on the international market, and will assist in the development of the agricultural sector. |
