Wednesday April 27, 2011 –  Saint Lucia has no existing data on the number of  cases  of juvenile diabetes on island.

This situation however will soon be rectified  with the coming on stream of the establishment  of a registry of juvenile diabetics.

Executive Director of the  Saint Lucia Diabetes and Hypertension Association,  Mr. George Eugene,  says the International Diabetes Association will fund the project.

“Saint Lucia, Jamaica and Belize have been the three countries selected to do a pilot project following which 21 other countries in the Caribbean will be on board to participate in the registry to find out how many children in the Caribbean are suffering with diabetes.”

The registry, he says, will come with benefits as  international support will   be  more informed with the necessary data  to render the required  assistance to children with diabetes.

“What we are looking for  going forward, is to have as many children as possible  sign up for the registry that will be put in place.  A number of tests will be made available for the children and insulin will be provided.”

Diabetes is a chronic disease that arises when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.
