The Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO), is providing pipe-borne water to
Anse-La-Raye village for the first time since the passage of Hurricane Tomas on
October 30, 2010.
The entire transmission line, from the holding tank at Venus to the community, had been washed away as the river swelled with rapidly flowing water.
WASCO’s Managing Director, John Joseph, said the company is relieved to have the transmission line restored.
However, crews have an additional challenge of dealing with high levels of silt which continues to flow into the river.
Two potable treatment plants have been set up in Canaries, to provide residents with some water.
WASCO’s crews are still working to restore the supply infrastructure in that part of the island.
Intakes in Vieux-Fort are continuing to prove challenging to the crews, because of constant re-silting. As a result, the supply to Vieux-Fort and its environs has been intermittent.
On Wednesday, November 24, 2010, WASCO received more support from the French in the form of 24” and 4” pipes, fittings and storage tanks. These supplies will be used to repair the infrastructure and provide relief in Canaries and Micoud.
