Monday, September 27, 2010 –  The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force is seeking to reinforce the benefits of  community policing  amongst the rank and file of the force. To that end a recent workshop was facilitated by officials of the United States Embassy  in Barbados and sought to build on the  successes of community policing which has been achieved by the local police.

The community policing  programme was initially introduced in communities  like  Marchand  and has been met with much success.

Political Officer of the US Embassy David Seckinger, says community policing is   something  that has been tested in a number of cities in the United states  with good success.

“In the United states  we have recently  established our Caribbean basin  initiative  which is going to be a 46 million dollar venture this year and 75 million dollars next year. This is money that will  be spent in the Caribbean—a lot  on anti-crime  activity. We are trying to see if community policing is an activity that might  fit into the overall anti-crime programme.”

The workshops were interactive sessions where specific scenarios were discussed. During these sessions, Wexler presented cases for behavioural changes and approach to authority for both groups in order to attain full cooperation within the society.
