Wednesday 17 November 2010 – The Ministry of Health has received assistance to help combat the shortage of water in Saint Lucia from a US based organization known as “Operation Blessing”. The organization—a humanitarian group—specializes in disaster relief, particularly in the provision of drinking water to disaster struck areas.
The humanitarian group has water mobile plants on the island and has so far donated thousands of water disinfectant tablets to persons in need. Environmental Officer with the Ministry of Health Emmerson Vitalis, says water disinfected with the tablets has specific purposes.
“The basic constituent of this is chlorine, sodium hypo-chloride. What one does one tablet into 2.5 gallons of water, shake the for about two minutes to allow the tablets to dissolve, then allow the water to stand for about thirty minutes before it is consumed. This process only disinfects the water. The disinfected water should not be used for drinking—solely for domestic purposes such as washing or cleaning around the house hold.
Persons who use the tablets are advised to filter the water with a clean cloth as it makes the disinfectant more effective. The Ministry of Health would says the tablets will be available in communities island wide and announcements as to where and when the general public can receive them will be announced. |
