Thursday 25 November 2010 – The Ministry of Education and Culture is calling for the commitment and support of parents, students and the general public, as it continues to strive towards ensuring the full recovery of schools after the passage of Hurricane Tomas.
Deputy Chief Education Officer responsible for Planning in the Ministry of Education and Culture, Marcus Edward, says the education ministry has reinstated the school transportation programme and is working towards recommencing the school feeding programme.
“The school transportation programme resumes with the re-opening of schools. We also oversee the school feeding programme. All schools where the programme operates received substantial damages. The rain was able able to penetrate louvres or ceilings and get into the stockpile of things we had.”
Mr. Edward says schools now need to replenish the stockpile of foodstuff ruined by storm damage or power outages.
“We have been working to restore the programme in a few schools. The principals were able to salvage something and I believe that in most schools the programme will resume as of today. I think by next week the programme will be back to full force.”
Under the school feeding programme, students are provided with lunchtime meals throughout the school week. |
