Tuesday, September 28, 2010 – Acting Chief Executive Officer at the St. Jude Hospital, Dr. Cheirry Poyotte says the hospital is committed to improving on its volunteer services. Dr. Poyotte’s comments came against the backdrop of the arrival of the fifth delegation of Taiwanese medical volunteers on the weekend, making it a total of twenty doctors and eight nurses to visit under the volunteer programme so far.
The volunteer programme is a component of the twinning agreement between St. Jude and the Changua Christian Hospital of Taiwan.
“The Taiwanese volunteers have become such a part of St. Jude hospital that (we do not want to take them for granted) it feels very comfortable having you here with us. We certainly hope that you will gain from the experience at St. Jude. We certainly know that we will will gain from having you here. This programme is an important part of the volunteer programme. The volunteer programme at St. Jude is a key component in terms of what it is we are trying to do with regards to continuing the role of St. Jude has in providing expert care to the people of Saint Lucia.”
Ambassador of Taiwan to Saint Lucia His Excellency Tom Chou, explains that voluntarism though a new culture for Taiwan, is a positive initiative in the sharing of expertise and experiences.
“More than 100 year ago when the Western Priests and doctors came to Taiwan to help our people we appreciated that very much and then after 100 years we began to lend our volunteers overseas to help some other countries. This kind of sharing gives you satisfaction.”
In addition to the sharing of expertise, the Taiwanese delegation has also donated several pieces of medical equipment to St. Jude. The Taiwanese medical volunteers will be here for a period of three weeks.
Head of the delegation Helen Kao says the Saint Lucia Volunteer Programme is the most popular programme at the Changua Christian Hospital.
