Wednesday 15 December 2010   The Government and people of Sweden have appointed a new Ambassador Designate to Saint Lucia in keeping with its commitment to strengthen the diplomatic relationship between the two countries.

In presenting his credentials to the Head of State on Tuesday December 14, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary His Excellency Mr Claes Hammer enforced Sweden’s pledge to maintain and further strengthen the ties of friendship and cooperation that exist between Saint Lucia and Sweden.

The Swedish diplomat says his government wants to further cooperation through cultural exchange, investment and bilateral trade.

“I personally hope to be able to continue to further develop the bilateral trade, economic and political exchange between our two countries.

“In Sweden the government will work very hard to improve the business and innovation climate. We think that in Sweden we have been able to stimulate entrepreneurship and development and we have strong industries which we hope can contribute to the further development of Saint Lucia,”the Ambassador remarked.

As countries seek to tackle contemporary global challenges, Saint Lucia`s Governor General says there are many lessons which Sweden and Saint Lucia can learn from each other’s experiences.

Her Excellency Dame Pearlette Louisy also expressed Saint Lucia`s commitment to the programmes and projects which may arise from deliberations with Sweden.

“I note Sweden`s commitment to the attainment of the United Nations Millennium Goals and its development policy of giving priority consideration to combating poverty by helping to create the conditions for people around the world to improve their lives. In this regard, you might find our own Poverty Assessment Report a good starting point for discussions on the issue.

“The thorny issue of climate changes and its related effects on the environment is another area in which Saint Lucia and Sweden will find common ground and take common cause. Small island states like Saint Lucia feel particularly threatened by the implications and consequences of climate change and we would welcome Sweden sharing with us its  considerable experience in dealing with the challenges that this poses.”

As the country`s Ambassador designate to Saint Lucia His Excellency Mr Claes Hammer replaces H.E. Mr. Sten  Ask.

His appointment marks twenty nine years since Saint Lucia and Sweden established diplomatic relations back in 1981.
Sweden is the third largest country in the European Union by area, with a total population of about 9.4 million.
