Tuesday 12 October 2010 – At the closing ceremony of a Sports Medicine/Sports Psychology Workshop organized by the Ministry of Social transformation, Youth and Sports, participants were charged with the responsibility of sharing their newly acquired knowledge with their respective sports clubs and organizations. The challenge came from Mrs. Joanna Reynolds-Atherton, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Department of Youth and Sports.
“The development of sports in Saint Lucia is not only the responsibility of the Department of Youth and Sports, but officers, the clubs, national associations and community groups. We hope that you join us in our thrust towards revitalizing our department and revitalizing sports in Saint Lucia.”
The brainchild of Youth and Sports Minister, Hon. Lenard Montoute, the three-day exercise—which focused on the importance of physical fitness, health, and safety—targeted coaches and sports administrators, who, according to Minister Montoute are integral in youth development.
“Very often we quantify your value by the number of medals and trophies that you win, and the number of national athletes that you produce, but it goes beyond that; many of our athletes may not become elite athletes, but every athlete that you interact with, would have been instilled with values that are useful to their lives.” The Sports Medicine/ Sports Psychology Workshop, forms part of the overall thrust to improve on the services and image of the Department of Youth and Sports and was sponsored under the Elite Athlete Programme of the Department.
