Tuesday 9 November 2010 – The Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority recently announced that it has resumed its normal services after the eventful passing of Hurricane Tomas. Education and Public Information Manager of the Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority, Emlyn Jean, implores that members of the public use their discretion when disposing of waste.
“We would like to appeal to the public to understand that it is a regular collection service that is being offered. We do understand that to some extent certain things are wet in some homes and persons need to get rid of them. But we must understand that when one person puts out almost a truck load or half a truck load of waste, it would take the contractor a longer time to service other communities.”
Ms Jean encourages the public to, if possible, help themselves as working contractors may be swamped with an enormous amount of waste as a result of Hurricane Tomas.
“In the event that any individual requires immediate disposal of waste, for example, if persons have large quantities of waste, they are free to go to the Deglos Sanitary Landfill or the Vieux-Fort solid waste management facility to dispose of items; the issue with green waste/fallen trees is not the responsibility of the contractor to dispose. I would like to advise the public though, to try not to use the Trois Piton route. Instead, go through the highway to get to the Deglos Sanitary Landfill.
With the current high volumes of waste, the Authority urges the public to dispose waste at the Deglos Sanitary Landfill and the Vieux-Fort Solid Waste Management Facility.
