Thursday, September 30, 2010 – The Ministry of Social Transformation, Youth and Sports pays tribute to all young persons throughout Saint Lucia, particularly those who have contributed to the country’s development, in spite of the many social and economic challenges which confront them each day.
In a message, on the occasion of Caribbean Youth Day which was observed on Thursday the 29th of September, Youth Officer Margaret Deterville says the ministry also recognizes and commends the many people and institutions who continue to make invaluable investments to enhance the skills and capacities of young people.
“Special commendation must be given to agencies such as the Office of Private Sector Relations (OPSR), the Generation X Programme, the Royal Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (RBTT), and the Chamber of Commerce for pioneering the Young Leaders Program. As we observe Caribbean Youth Day 2010, we wish to congratulate all young entrepreneurs for their sterling contribution towards the national economy and their struggle to provide employment opportunities for themselves and other young people.”
Caribbean Youth Day provides policy makers and institutions working with young people, an opportunity to reflect on the many issues and challenges confronting young people the world over and interventions that are necessary to deal with those challenges.
“The Ministry of Social Transformation, Youth and Sports has implemented and collaborated on a number of programmes which include: the Young Americas Business Trust, the Holistic Opportunities for Personal Empowerment (HOPE) programme, After School Programmes launched in three communities namely: Faux A Chaud (Castries South), La Maze (Choiseul); and Mon Repos (Micoud North). All of these initiatives are geared towards youth development and preparing young persons to face the challenges of the future in a climate of empowerment, growth and optimism. The Ministry of Social Transformation, Youth and Sports wishes all Saint Lucian youth a blessed and productive Caribbean Youth Day 2010.”
Caribbean Youth Day 2010 was observed under the theme, “Creating sustainable employment for young people”.
Meantime, the International Year of Youth which commenced on the 12th of August, 2010, has highlighted the importance of encouraging young people to dedicate themselves to achieving progress.
