Tuesday 12 October 2010 – The public speaking skills of the nations’ primary school students will be showcased and tested today Wednesday October 13, when the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards hosts the SLBS/Super J/IGA National Oratorical Contest.
The competition forms part of World Standards Day celebrations and will involve grade five students from throughout the island.
Director of the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards Dr Cherry Constantine says the aim is to sensitize the students on the work of the Bureau while promoting the importance of standards.
“The students had to get together with their teachers. We presented them with research packages which provided information about the theme and information about the work of the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards. They are suppose to take this information and develop short five minute presentations that speak about the theme for World Standards which is: “Standards Make the World Accessible for All”. The students can either memorise a short speech and recite it from memory or they can read it. The whole idea is to get the students to develop presentation skills. When they present their speeches, we will be looking at diction, pronunciation and various aspects of public speaking.”
The National Oratorical Contest will take place at the National Insurance Corporation Conference Centre from 9 a.m. this morning.
Competing schools include Millet Primary, Dame Pearlette Louisy Primary, Camille Henry Memorial, Ava Maria Primary, Les Etangs Primary School, and the Piaye Primary School. The Minister for Commerce, Industry and Consumer Affairs Honourable Tessa Mangal will address the students before declaring the National Oratorical Contest officially open.
