Monday 6 December 2010 – Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank Sir Dwight Venner has shared his concerns regarding crime and its impact on the economic growth and activities of the region.
Sir Dwight last week, addressed the opening of the two day inter-sessionary meeting of the Association of Caribbean Commissioners of Police in Barbados.
He asserted that having made the transition from agriculture to tourism in order to enhance the economic well-being of the region, the tourism industry remains very vulnerable to acts of criminality.
Sir Dwight cited a recent incident in St. Kitts just two weeks ago, when a cruise ship pulled out of the island because of the robbery of a bus load of tourists.
He says because of such losses, the region's economies stand to suffer severely. In light of these threats it follows logically that more attention should be focused on increasing the capacity of the police.
The ECCB’s governor explained that the system of criminality in the region has evolved and matured in a manner that presents more challenges to the state system. He reiterated a call for one single force to police the entire Eastern Caribbean States.
