Monday 11 October 2010  The Saint Lucia Red Cross in collaboration with health officials are working assiduously to address the health needs of Dennery residents who were affected by flooding last week.

Recognising that stagnant water is a potential source of diseases, the Red Cross has distributed hygiene kits to the affected residents.

Disaster Coordinator of the Saint Lucia Red Cross Mr Hubert Pierre, says his organization has already engaged regional partners in an effort to secure funding to purchase more hygiene kits and other disaster relief supplies.

“We are going to be looking at dengue fever closely and all diseases which people can get because of the situation the area is now in, so we are going to go in train at the red Cross and then red cross members will go out there are roll out the plan.”

“The assessment and the monitoring will continue we are also thinking of providing sleeping material like mattresses and sleeping bags for residents in need. We are going to look at the houses and if the flooring is bad and there are repairs to be done we are going to seek a partner to help us with this. There is a lot to be done and the health aspect of our response is a serious one. We are going to do all in our power to ensure that we reach people to assist them.”

This past Sunday the Red Cross mounted an appeal on Radio Saint Lucia for assistance for the affected residents.  Mr. Pierre says the Red Cross welcomes donations from the general public.

“Anybody with a good heart recognising what has happened and want to assist we welcome that but we won’t go into the banks and knocking on doors as we did for Haiti.  We have an emergency in Saint Lucia but a disaster for the people of Dennery. We have resources to assist in cleaning the houses and make them safer, so as to prevent an outbreak of any diseases.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation can contact the Saint Lucia Red Cross at 452-5582
