Friday 5 November 2010  An appeal  has come from the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association (SLBWA) on behalf of the  mobility challenged and vulnerable people, to persons, authorities,  and organizations, co-coordinating disaster  relief.

Director of the Saint Lucia Blind Welfare  Association Mr. Anthony Avril,  says these persons include not only the blind and visually impaired but the sick and the elderly.

“We are indeed very concerned at the  Saint Lucia Blind Welfare Association with regard to the people with  disabilities; those who are blind and those with other disabilities. The hurricane  impacted the whole island. The people with disabilities  are  not able to avail themselves of the opportunities when it comes to distribution points and they can so easily be forgotten.”

The  SLBWA official said the  disabled,  elderly and children, remain among the most vulnerable both during and after  natural disasters.

The association says it  will be sometime before the full picture of  the hurricane's  impact on the disabled emerges, but there is no doubt that such persons would require post hurricane  assistance.
