Wednesday 10 November 2010  In aftermath of the devastation of Hurricane Tomas, many organizations were and still are on the ground assisting needy and deprived persons within several communities. Red Cross Disaster Coordinator, Mr. Hubert Pierre told the GIS that his organization kicked into high gear as per its mandate and has been offering much needed assistance to thousands of Saint Lucians.

“As an auxiliary to the government we continue doing our work  as we would normally try to do it, that would be trying to seek out the most vulnerable, those persons who are destitute, those who are displaced and that is what we are doing. We are doing a thorough assessment, we are checking out their needs and we are trying to serve them with their needs.”

Mr. Pierre thanked Saint Lucians, and the people of Martinique who assisted with boat loads of water and food stuffs which Mr. Pierre says enabled the Red Cross to distribute the items in areas such as Fond St. Jacques, Marc, Bexon, Dennery,  Anse La Raye, Canaries, Roseau, Coolie Town and Millet. Whilst expressing gratitude to persons who had assisted with their vehicles in the relief effort, Mr. Pierre says that more abled bodied volunteers are needed to speed up the process.

He noted that the Red Cross is particularly concerned with  getting potable water to affected communities

“We are focusing on water and sanitation with the French Red Cross. We already have a plant here where we are going to make 15’000 gallons of water available to Saint Lucians. A second plant is coming and we are going to position it somewhere in the south. There are also some water plants, which can give us millions of gallons of water. We are also working closely with the rotary to get that done.”
